Why should Ryanair take on Norwegian

And with taking on I don't mean competing against them but rather swallowing the juicy parts of it.

What do Norwegian have that could be attractive to Ryanair:

It has a loyal following in Norway and parts of Scandinavia . A following that want Low Fares but loats Ryanair.

It has a well established net of routes within Scandinavia and domestically within Norway that Ryanair would have a problem copying without diluting its own union stance and cost base.

It is positioned at the more premium part of Low Fares with a less agitating policy against customers. This could be expanded upon incorporating some more Low Cost basics for profitability. And without messing up the Ryanair image anc cost base like its own Always Getting Better efforts have done to the bottom line lately.

It has a Transatlantic/Transcontinental fleet and a worked up net of routes and we all know how O'Leary have long wanted to somehow do Transatlantic Low Cost. A part that could be split out from Norwegian Scandinavia. And a separate part shouldn't distract Ryanair DAC from its primary objective like the Ryanair board was nervous about a few years ago.

It could possibly learn Ryanair a thing or two about how to handle unions in line with government attitudes and without the costly often widely publicised soical backlash trial and error that Ryanair's own handling of them often leads to.

What can Ryanair bring to make Norwegian profitable:

Information about what makes a Low Fares a Low Cost introducing a purer form in Norwegian. More like Ryanair before the add-ons and like Southwest now with free seating.

It knows what is the best deals at Europes airports and could bring this knowledge to Norwegian's negotiations.

It has(had) a tight grip on costs and Norwegian don't. It could learn Norwegian a lot about how to organize its finances.

The group could do better deals on both purchasing and leasing of planes. The bigger customer the more power.

Ryanair's system of inhouse travelling plane maintenance could bring down these costs also for Norwegian. There must be cost savings obtainable since both have the same planes in the 737-800.

An integrated solution would save system costs for Norwegian and split the bill for Ryanair's IT costs on more players.

The Ryanair website/app could sell more connections and now even on own group routes.

It would give Ryanair as a group a leg up over Wizz in the Scandinavian market. A market with flying needs even in a pandemic. And where Ryanair alone wouldn't have Wizz's initial Eastern Europe travelling workers advantage for a base.

All this without Norwegian really rivalling the Ryanair that is now. Few of the routes directly compete and further streamlining could be done. Sample Ryanair could do Dublin-Oslo while Norwegian could do Dublin-Bergen and Dublin-Trondheim and even further north.

A deal for Norwegian minus halve its planes and most of its debt, would expand the Ryanair Group with a quick jump in key markets and make it a true world operator. And for a very modest outlay.

With the right management Norwegian could be profitable in 1-2 years. And in 3-5 years it could again go pubic and Ryanair could offload its shares for a pretty penny, or hold on to them to boost its own profits if it wouldn't like the potential now profitable competitor.
