Airlines presentations of numbers in a crisis leaves a lot to be desired

Norwegian came out with its may figures today. The only numbers was total flown in May and how many seat kilometers had been offered. That is like comparing grapes and melons.

Airlines have somthing to learn from Trump. Instead of focusing on the total number of unemployed in todays press conference he was all about how many had gone back to work. That is a positive number and was taken positively by the stock market. Airlines should do something similar and get used to that this year is different. I'm sure in Europe May's numbers would have compared favourably with April and that is what should have been emphasised.
How many more passengers in May than April. How was the load factor on the planes that did fly. How was the payment willingness among they who do fly. How many planes in use compared to total fleet and add to that the percentage number of earlier total staff brought back and what the production was in the same period last year to see the theoretical potential. These are numbers that would say something about which way things are progressing and help predict about the future. But with a positive shine.

That is unless yours is one of the airlines that still haven't completed your preferred staff and terms  shedding plans. Or even the negotiations with your staff on those. Then you would want to maximise the crisis a bit further even if you do see a light at the end of the tunnel.
It is quite telling that in the beginning when airline bosses was trying to placate the stock market they forecasted that business was getting back to normal latte this year and at least in 2021. Now when they see the potential for long term savings they play the poor mouth and say savings in pay reductions have to be for 5 year terms because it will take that long for the new normal to establish.
And we all know how impossible it is to negotiate pay rises with sample Wilson in Ryanair while he thinks he has a signed 5 year deal in his pocket. No matter how well the comapny was doing he would stick to it. Would take another rostering mess to get through there.
